Coaches education information and updates will continued to be released on a regular basis throughout the season. We will host level 100/200 USSS Certification events as well as NYSSRA project based education opportunities. These will be delivered regionally by Mergs and Coaches Committee Staff. USSS is also rolling out a series of virtual Coaches Education this fall.
Coaches education is paramount for the development, success, and health of alpine ski racing in our state. Our philosophy of 'Athletes First' is a cornerstone of everything we do. Continued education in all areas of this sport has to be on everyones plate. Opportunities can be found on the US Ski and Snowboard website under 'education and certification' along with updated information on technique, tactics, conditioning, nutrition, and mental skills. Within the NYSSRA organization we will offer scheduled clinics, both on and off snow, and weeknight athlete projects combined with project based coaches education. NYSSRA will also be presenting Virtual opportunities on a monthly basis, so stay aware and tune in! We always post these events on the front page of the NYSSRA website.
This site will also move forward providing video, training ideas, and documents that will cover updates and share new concepts.
Coaches Challenge (challenge replacing the word drills): NYSSRA will add a ‘Coaches Challenge’ starting in January when snow hits the ground this season. These will come from the Alpine Sports Director and Coaches from around the State.
This portal will be a living document and will have information added continually. National, Regional, and State contributions are the source for this information.

Steve first started skiing at Killington at the age of 5. At that point he migrated over to Gore Mountain. Steve was not part of any structured race program at Gore but raced as a J1-2. Steve was coached by his Dad originally and trained with a few other friend athletes borrowing bamboo and setting up training environments on trails. Steve’s coaching resume is extensive during his 38 years in a row of commitment to the sport of alpine ski racing. His experience has covered U10/U12/U14/U16+ athletes, most of these years having been in the NYSEF Gore program. Most recently, Steve has been the head U10/U12 coach at Gore. His passion and work ethic has been significant working with coaches and athletes. Steve has also been a past member of NYSSRA Development Committees, NYSSRA High School Liaison, NYSPHSAA Section 2 Coordinator. Steve and his wife Caroline are also competitive sailing partners, which is now where you will find him most of the year. My personal experience with Steve is one of deep respect for his energy, knowledge, and love for coaching young athletes fostering development of the whole athlete. His shoes will be tough to fill now that he has announced his retirement, but wish Steve a great future in his next evolution in life!
