Jimbo Johnston hails from Bluemont Ski area outside Buffalo NY. Jimbo had the great opportunity to be on snow as much as possible growing up at Bluemont Ski Area which was a family owned area. Moving to Saranac Lake NY to attend North Country Community College Jimbo was an integral part of the alpine ski team, training and racing out of Whiteface Mountain NY. Jimbo then went on to finish his college experience at Plymouth State College located in Plymouth NH. Jimbo again playing a big part on the Plymouth alpine team helping to achieve a National Championship! Jimbo has been inducted to the North Country College and Plymouth State College Hall of Fame. Another side of alpine for Jimbo is his love for telemark skiing where he competed at the National Level and World Cup circuit. These experiences and passion for the sport of alpine skiing led to the next phase, coaching!
Jimbo has been coaching for 28 years working with prior age groups to include J5 - J4 - J3 athletes and now is the Head U14 coach for New York Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF) at Whiteface NY. Jimbo has had a big part in helping junior athletes achieve their personal goals. Developing solid skill acquisition for all athletes which in turn has had athlete success at all levels (from solid fundamental skiers to World Cup athletes). His guidance and coaching approach are unique to him and is recognized across the entire eastern region. During the off season months Jimbo organizes and runs training opportunities for NYSEF at various locations for summer on snow development projects. Jimbo also balances this with a local contracting business in the Lake Placid area.
Jimbo's advice to athletes is - trust the process and work hard, and to coaches focus on solid fundamentals and drive home all skill development.
